Trade shows are like a sensory explosion—rows of booths, eye-popping visuals, free swag, and a lot of noise. To stand out, you need a game plan that is more than just flashy displays and stacks of business cards. Let’s break down how you can make your booth the one everyone remembers.
Ditch the “Solutions” Talk
Trade show booths are full of brands claiming to offer “innovative solutions” that “empower” or “optimize.” Yawn. “Solutions” can mean anything from AI software to fancy staplers. Be specific! If you design wine labels that jump off the shelf, say that. If your packaging cuts through the clutter to drives sales, go with that. Clear, specific language tells people exactly what you do—and makes you way more memorable.
Grab Attention with a Punchy One-Liner
Forget long-winded taglines and find something short and punchy that stops people in their tracks. Think of it as your brand’s pickup line—bold, memorable and curiosity-inducing in five seconds or less. “Wine Labels That Sell Themselves” or “Packaging That Pops” says a lot without saying too much. A great one-liner should be like a tiny magnet, pulling people in and making them want to know more.
An Experience, Not a Wall of Words
A HUGE mistake brands make is to overload displays with text. Trade show floors are a blur—no one will stop and read a novel. Keep your display clean, with just enough to intrigue people and start conversations. If you’re in the food or wine biz, set up a tasting. Packaging designer? Bring samples people can actually hold and feel. Add an interactive element. When you give people something to do and they’ll stick around.
Our client, The Bee Society uses see-through demonstration hive. It stops people in their tracks. And they stay a while, as they try to identify the Queen.
Trade Show Swag They Want
Trade show attendees don’t need another pen, stress ball or plastic water bottle. Make your takeaway something unique that ties to your brand. When working with a grapevine nursery, we suggested branded work gloves and knife holsters—things the target audience would keep and use! When working with a hospital to recruit doctors to the desert of southeastern Washington state. We developed a campaign called “Sunglasses Required”—complete with branded sunglasses and sunscreen.
Tell a Story They Remember
People are bombarded with slogans and pitches all day, so it’s easy for everything to blur together. Instead a rehearsed elevator pitch, tell a quick story that demonstrates what makes you special. Maybe it’s a client success story or a unique challenge you tackled with style. Stories are relatable and memorable. They’ll help people see your brand as more than just another face in the crowd.
Follow-Up the Show With a Friendly Twist
The end of a trade show day is a blur of faces and names. By the time one gets back to their hotel, half of what they saw will be fuzzy. That’s why a thoughtful follow-up is key. Instead of a generic email, reference something specific from your conversation. It’s personal and memorable, reminding them why they liked you!
Standing out at a trade show isn’t about who has the biggest booth or the flashiest display. It’s about being specific, creating a fun experience and building connections that last. Show up, be clear, have fun and make people remember you long after the show’s over. If we can help, give us a call at (509) 545-4584 or find our contact form online at https://saranelson.com
